Uncovering Archive is a relational and collective artistic project initiated in 2017 by the researcher and visual artist Marina Planas. The aim of the project is to promote artistic research and re-enliven the Planas Archive in an innovative manner.
The Planas Archive is the most important documentary collection dedicated to the development of mass tourism and image to date. Currently, it is conceived as a space for thought and reflection on the history of the Balearic Islands, tourism, and imagery from the perspective of contemporary culture and thought.
The project was set in motion through research residencies with the support of Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics, Consell de Mallorca, Ajuntament de Palma, Eurorregión Pirineos Mediterránea, Ministerio de Cultura, IB Dona, Goethe-Institut, Fundación Teatre Principal, and Fundación Daniel y Nina Carasso.
The residencies align with the discursive axes outlined in Marina Planas' artistic statement addressing themes such as indexing-taxonomies, the interplay of body and archive, technological experiences, connections between Germany and Mallorca, and other geopolitical relationships associated with travel and photography. Additionally, the residencies explore discussions surrounding gender, collective memory, tourism sustainability, mental health, and the intersection of social innovation with contemporary creation.
This diverse collection of perspectives on the Planas Archive involves more than 30 artists and researchers who contribute to the exploration of discursive themes within the realm of the project
