UNCOVERING ARCHIVE 2026 – Residency Goethe-Institut
The residency project at Casa Planas, as part of the ‘Uncovering Archive’ call for applications, consists of an artistic research project that links the centre’s photographic heritage with the practice of itinerant analogue photography and contemporary digital reflection.
Through the ‘Habitar el Archivo’ initiative, the process centres on exploring the centre’s documentary collections with a view to revitalising them within the local area by means of an analogue laboratory and a mobile camera obscura (housed in a Citroën Jumper van). The project combines field trips to the Serra de Tramuntana with pinhole cameras and methodological interviews.
As a critical counterpoint, the research incorporates a re-photography exercise using a smartphone. In the face of the current democratisation and trivialisation of mass imagery, this exercise uses the mobile phone itself within the archive’s locations to juxtapose the analogue past with digital immediacy, seeking to create a ‘thoughtful image’ that stimulates critical thinking.
