Co-ordinated by: Maribel Rosselló

The exhibition, curated by María Sebastián and organised by the FTC/International Centre of Photography and Casa Planas, forms part of the 4th Photography and Architecture Conference. ‘The Gaze of (and for) Tourism’ offers a small selection of the materials preserved in the Casa Planas Archive, where photography serves both as a documentary source of touristification and as a subject of study in its own right.

The promotional materials created and collected by the photographer Josep Planas i Montanyà (1924–2016) trace the development of leisure architecture from its tentative beginnings in the early 20th century – with eclectic and often homely establishments – to the boom in mass tourism, characterised by functionalist ‘factory hotels’.

At the same time, the collection tells us about the company’s organisation and the process of creating images full of vibrant colours that cemented Mallorca’s image as a tourist destination.
