A two-pronged, dialogic exploration which, starting from a kind of essential staging of the archive and its multiple lines of expansion, provides the right perspective from which to engage with Clara Carvajal’s artistic and conceptual exploration. She has approached the tourist phenomenon of the Casa Planas Archive from a geological perspective that transcends what the measure of human time can represent, both in the sense of a footprint and in that of the immanence/transcendence dichotomy.
Negatives of the Sun. Two Centuries Since the Birth of Photography

On the occasion of the bicentenary of heliography (1826–2026), invented by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, this exhibition revisits the origins of photography as a writing of light. Taking Mallorca as a pioneering laboratory in industrial photographic techniques, the exhibition traces the technical and aesthetic evolution of the medium through the Casa Planas Archive. From early negatives to tourist postcards, photography in Mallorca is conceived as a key driver in shaping the island’s tourist imaginary.
