Uncovering Archive 2020 - Goethe auf Mallorca - Goethe-Institut
During the research residency, my intention has been to explore connections between some of the key concepts in the work and methodology of Harun Farocki and the production of promotional tourist images of the island. Throughout the process, I have rediscovered small stories that bear witness to an imaginary constructed from overlays that have little to do with Mallorca’s everyday reality: camels walking on the beach of S’Arenal, other exotic animals presented as native, postcards depicting Mallorca with an aesthetic similar to a treasure map, or Extremaduran ceramics sold as locally produced items, to name a few.

These images, which have travelled all over the world to this day, aim to establish a dialogue with what is erased in the construction of the island's cliché: the images that are left out of the narrative. Thus, through a constellation of selected photographs, this initial approach also seeks to make visible the power dynamics that arise from the creation of that imaginary, which seems, on the other hand, to maintain a certain relevance. Returning to the images and pausing for a moment to ask ourselves with what intention, why, and under which ideological frameworks they were produced.
