Archives Day at the UIB
Friday 5th June - 10am to 1pm
Graduation Hall of the Ramon Llull Building UIB Campus

On the occasion of International Archives Day, the University of the Balearic Islands is organising a day dedicated to highlighting the fundamental role of archives in the preservation, study and dissemination of documentary heritage. The event will bring together professionals and organisations working to preserve personal and documentary collections of great significance to the cultural heritage of the Balearic Islands.

The event will begin with a presentation by the UIB’s Centre for Document Digitisation, followed by a talk on the work carried out on various personal archives, including the Waldren–Veny-Monlau collection. Next, various organisations will share their experiences and projects relating to the management, conservation and promotion of their documentary collections: the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation, the Mallorca Literària Foundation, the Casa Planas Foundation and the Museum of Mallorca.

On behalf of the Casa Planas Foundation, a presentation will be given on the work being carried out in relation to the Planas Archive, one of the most important photographic collections for understanding the development of tourism and the social and cultural transformations of the Balearic Islands throughout the 20th century.

After a coffee break, the day will continue with the opening of the temporary exhibition El cuaderno de bitácora del Capitán Barceló, followed by a specialist talk by the historian Miquel Deyà, who will explore the historical figure of Captain Barceló and the heritage value of the documents that make up his legacy.

This initiative offers a unique opportunity to gain an insight into archival work, learn about document preservation projects led by various cultural institutions, and reflect on the importance of archives as essential tools for building and passing on collective memory.
