Introduction to the llata

The project focuses on two traditional Mallorcan crafts that played an important role even before the arrival of mass tourism: the ‘Roba de llengües’, a fabric produced using the ikat technique, and the ‘Llata’, a fabric woven from palm leaves.

Both forms of craftsmanship embody cultural identity, but have undergone profound changes as a result of tourism.

Research into the Casa Planas archive reveals just how fragmentary its documented, visible traces are

in private photographs or peripheral subjects of the

everyday life.

At the same time, visits were made to workshops where these techniques are still practised and taught today.

The installation combines archive material, photographic documentation and objects from the workshops.

This helps us to understand the connection between craftsmanship,

cultural memory and the changes brought about

por el turismo.
