Pretextual Bargain

Reflections on tourism, archives, and the desired destination.

There are two different ways to travel. One is with a tour guide, who shows you all the nonsense everyone visits. You take a photo and move on, without experiencing anything more than a sanitized view and a handful of random facts. The other way of traveling takes more time, which is why this type of journey calls for something like a series or a mini-series, if I may stretch this bad metaphor a bit further. But if, for example, you’re somewhere, you set down your bag, head over to the bar or a local hangout, play the fool a little, make a few friends in the process, and open yourself up to a new environment, a new era, and new people, you’ll soon feel like you’re living in a completely different world..
